What is Perio-Implantitis

You just had your crown placed on your new implant so nothing can go wrong with my teeth, right?  Wrong ! Even though the implant and tooth (crown) are somewhat indestructible the bone and gum that hold the implant are not.  This is the case wither  you have one implant or an implant supported denture

If regular cleanings and exams are not maintained, you are at risk of developing "peri-implant mucositis" (swelling of the gum) around the implant. If this mild disease is not detected and treated (by regular professional cleanings) it could develop into a much more serious situation called perio-implantitis.

Perio-implantitis  effects the bone around the implant that can led to bone loss and implant failer. Early warning signs are red, swollen gums and bleeding when probed.

Because bone loss is painless, many people don’t realize they have the condition. So scrupulous oral hygiene and regular follow-up appointments after an implant are essential.   A patient must adhere to a lifelong maintenance and follow-up, which is a key part of the care process. Smokers, too, are at high risk.

Through regular home hygiene care i.e. brushing and flossing around the implant, and regular visits to your dentist and periodontist you can insure the success of your dental implant investments.
