Dental Health for Seniors

Senior Dental Health

Most problems stem from not maintaining your oral health at home and not visiting your dentist or periodontist regularly. If you are under the impression that you need to visit the dentist only when you are having pain, then it may be too late. If a dental problem is not resolved in a timely manner it could mean the removal  of the tooth and undergoing extensive procedures.

Surprisingly most problems in dentistry do not hurt because your tooth’s nerve has not been affected yet. However, that doesn’t mean that a problem is not present.  For instance,  periodontal disease (or bone loss) is painless, although the end result can be tooth lose.

If your overall goal is to keep your smile as healthy as it was 30 years ago, then the best thing you can do is continue to visit your dentist, and periodontist for regular  maintenance cleanings and exams.

Even if you don't have all of your natural teeth and plaque build-up is no longer a main concern for you, it's still imperative that you visit the dentist for regular check-ups and x-rays to check tissues, and keep an eye out for cancerous growths.
